Why I’m on a Mission to Help Parents Teach Math with Confidence

I’ve always loved helping people conquer math. With experience as a classroom teacher, math curriculum writer, homeschool mom, and math tutor, I’ve taught math from preschool to high school. (Fun fact: As far as I know, I’m the only person ever to graduate from Harvard with both a math degree and an elementary teaching certificate.)

When I began homeschooling my own kids, I began to see how much anxiety and stress math caused my homeschooling friends. Over the lunch tables at co-op, I heard story after story of math troubles:

The worry that moms feel when their child just doesn’t get the explanation in the book.

The frustration of helping a child practice long division over and over—and then getting a blank look when the child tries to do it the next day.

The tears and tantrums that make you dread even mentioning the math book.

As I listened, all I could think was: it doesn’t have to be this way.

So, I began answering my friend’s questions: How can I get my kid to finally remember the multiplication facts? Do I need all these manipulatives? Is it okay if I change my curriculum? Will my seven-year-old every stop writing his 3s backwards?

Week by week, I saw how just a little encouragement and advice helped my friends feel more confident and positive about teaching math. It made me want to help more moms beyond my tiny little co-op.

So, even though I knew nothing about programming or web design, I resolved to start a website to help homeschool parents with math. That New Year’s Eve, I googled “How do you start a blog?” and wrote my very first post.

Let’s Get Started!

It’s been a few years now since that New Year’s resolution. (It’s still the only one I’ve ever kept, though!) These days, I spend my time writing math books for the Well-Trained Mind Press, tutoring homeschoolers, and encouraging and supporting parents as they teach math.

Math time doesn’t have to be a tedious, boring slog. Instead, it can be interesting, satisfying, and even fun. I look forward to joining you on the journey!

Happy Math!
